Homes for sale, and what it’s like to live here

A railroad town of about 200 people, fifteen minutes northeast of Nevada, where the houses are some of the best value in the county and the high school is right in town.

Walker sits where Routes C and AA meet, ten miles northeast of Nevada and a few miles north of Highway 54. It was laid out in 1870 when the railroad reached this spot, named for Hiram F. Walker, one of the men who owned the land, and it grew up shipping cattle and hay — hundreds of railcars a year at its peak. The trains are gone, but the MFA elevator still stands where the depot was. Today Walker is a grid of quiet streets, two churches, a post office, a volunteer fire department, and the junior-senior high school for the northeast corner of the county. In 2020 the town marked its 150th year.

What you’ll find here

Three or four homes a year sell in Walker, and most of them are in town. The typical Walker house is a three-bedroom of about 1,200 square feet on a half-acre lot, built in the 1960s or ’70s — solid, single-story, and inexpensive. Since 2016 the median in-town sale has been about $77,000, with most selling between $63,000 and $101,000. That is roughly half the price of the same house in Nevada, fifteen minutes away, and it is why Walker draws first-time buyers and people who want a small town with a real school in it.

Prices have moved, though. Three of the last four homes sold in Walker went for more than $150,000, including a brand-new house on Marvin Avenue that sold this summer. Well-priced houses go quickly here: since 2021 the typical Walker home has gone under contract in about two weeks.

Out in the country, a Walker address usually means an older farmhouse on a few acres — the median is five acres, and more than half of those houses date from before 1940. They’ve sold for around $126,000 since 2016, and a 71-acre farm north of town brought $420,000 in 2023. Land trades in working-size pieces: the median parcel sold here was 42 acres, and four in ten were 80 acres or more.

Buyers here use every kind of financing. Since 2016 about three in ten paid cash, and another three in ten used a USDA, FHA or VA loan; the rest went conventional. Walker qualifies for USDA’s no-down-payment rural loan, which matters when the house costs $80,000.

The things people ask about

Schools. Walker is home to Northeast Vernon County R-I — the NEVC Knights. The junior-senior high school (grades 7–12) is on Leslie Avenue in Walker, and the elementary school (preschool through sixth grade) is fifteen miles up the road in Schell City. It’s a small district — about 185 students, fewer than nine per teacher — with a new superintendent since 2024 and a new high school principal since 2025. Nearly every house in town is in the NEVC district; a few country places east of town fall in the El Dorado Springs district instead. Ask us and we’ll check any house you’re considering.

Work. Most people drive to Nevada: 3M, the ADM plant, Nevada Regional Medical Center, Cottey College and the schools are all about fifteen minutes away. Some go the other way to El Dorado Springs, twenty minutes east on 54. MFA’s grain elevator in town is the one employer with a Walker address.

Health care. Nevada Regional Medical Center, with a 24-hour emergency room, is about fifteen minutes away — closer than it is for much of the county.

Getting places. Route C runs south a few miles to Highway 54, which puts you in Nevada in fifteen minutes and at I-49 a few minutes after that. Fort Scott is forty minutes west. Kansas City and Springfield are each about an hour and three-quarters; Joplin about an hour and a quarter.

Water. Houses in town are on the city water system, and the city is in the middle of a water-line improvement project paid for with federal ARPA money. Country places may be on a well or a rural water district — we’ll tell you which before you make an offer.

Doing things. Walker Fun Days fills the town for a weekend every September, and the volunteer Walker Community Betterment Association keeps things going the rest of the year with Final Fridays in the Park through the summer, potlucks and a pitch tournament. Beyond town, this is duck-hunting and river country. Schell-Osage Conservation Area, north of Walker along the Osage River, is more than 8,600 acres with 1,400 acres of managed wetlands, fishing, camping and some of the best waterfowl hunting in the state. Four Rivers Conservation Area, north of Nevada, is nearly 14,000 acres with more than twenty miles of river frontage. The Osage and Little Osage rivers are both close.
