El Dorado Springs, Missouri

Homes for sale, and what it’s like to live here

A town of 3,500 with a park in the middle, a hospital, and house prices that still make sense.

El Dorado Springs — locals say El Dorado and leave it at that — is thirty minutes east of Nevada on Highway 54, halfway to Stockton Lake. It grew up around a mineral spring that people came to for the water in the 1880s, and Spring Park is still the center of town: the bandstand where the municipal band has played summer evenings since 1886, and the Picnic every July that has run since 1882. It has its own hospital, its own schools, an airport, a newspaper, and a downtown that never quite emptied out — and lately it has been adding to all of it.

What you’ll find here

About seventy homes a year sell in El Dorado Springs, and most of them are the same kind of house that sells in Nevada: three bedrooms, one or two baths, on a city lot, at a price between roughly $100,000 and $220,000. Three in ten sell for cash. There’s a smaller supply of newer homes and acreages on the edges of town, senior apartments near the hospital, and the lake is close enough that some buyers use El Dorado Springs as the affordable way to live twenty minutes from Stockton Lake.

The things people ask about

Work. Cedar County Memorial Hospital is the town’s own hospital and one of its biggest employers — about 130 people, a 24-hour emergency room, surgery, rehab, a specialty clinic — and it’s growing: a $2.3 million MRI and CT suite broke ground in August 2026, and a cancer-care center opens in September, so treatment that used to mean a drive to Joplin or Kansas City now happens in town. Citizens Memorial runs a walk-in clinic open every day. The school district, retail, and manufacturing are the other big employers; the city has fifty acres of serviced industrial land by the airport and a $4.5 million federal grant for a new police-and-fire building. Plenty of people commute to Nevada or Stockton.

Schools. El Dorado Springs R-II runs the public schools — elementary, middle and high school, with dual-credit and A+ programs and a career-tech track — and voters passed a $6 million no-tax-increase bond in 2025 to upgrade the buildings. The high school crowned its first-ever state wrestling champion in 2025. El Dorado Christian School, the private option, won a state basketball championship in 2026.

Getting places. Highway 54 runs west to Nevada and I-49 (thirty minutes) and east to Stockton and on toward Springfield (about an hour and twenty minutes). Kansas City is about two hours north. El Do Memorial Airport is on the east side of town.

Doing things. Spring Park and the Picnic every July — three days of carnival, free concerts and reunions that the whole town turns out for, 145 years and counting; the municipal band on Friday, Saturday and Sunday all summer; a 108-year-old swimming pool just renovated top to bottom, with a new splash pad; a nine-hole golf course; the Wayside Inn Museum in an 1882 hotel; a children’s theatre; and a car club whose May car show has put more than $100,000 into scholarships and local causes. Stockton Lake is twenty minutes east — boating, fishing, and one of the best sailing lakes in the Midwest — with Truman Lake and Pomme de Terre not much farther, and the Schell-Osage conservation area and thousands of acres of prairie minutes away for hunting and birding.
